Troubled nonaligned summit opens in India

The nonaligned conference opened today with several divisive issues unresolved. In a meeting of foreign ministers prior to the conference, Egypt told Libya and Syria it was ready for a showdown at the summit. Both Arab hard-line countries were trying to expel Egypt because of its peace treaty with Israel.

Meanwhile, moderate Arab states tried to push through a plan to end the 30 -month-old Iran-Iraq war, but sources gave it little chance of winning endorsement in the summit of nearly 100 government leaders. The movement shelved the dispute over who would represent Kampuchea, leaving the seat vacant just as it did at the last summit in 1979.
