Israeli troops attacked southeast of Beirut

February 18, 1983

An ambush southeast of Beirut killed two Israeli soldiers and wounded two others, Tel Aviv military command said. The report said gunmen fired Soviet-made rifles and then escaped. The attack - the second on Israeli troops in two days - occurred in an area of the Shouf Mountains controled by Druze Muslim militias.

In Jerusalem, meanwhile, a military court convicted four Israeli soldiers of brutality in putting down Palestinian riots last year in the occupied West Bank. Israel Radio said three other soldiers were acquitted.
