Polish police break up a pro-Solidarity march

February 15, 1983

Polish riot police broke up a march - apparently peaceful - by supporters of the outlawed Solidarity union. Witnesses said the marchers, marking the 14th month since a military crackdown began, demanded the release of seven top Solidarity leaders under investigation on charges of antistate activity.

In West Germany, two Poles who claimed membership in Solidarity were each sentenced to 41/2 years for hijacking a Polish airline flight last August to escape to the West. The prosecution said they fled more for economic than political reasons.
