AT&T puts long-distance fiber optics to work

February 11, 1983

Telephone and data communication between Washington and New York will never be the same again, reports Monitor correspondent Ron Scherer. AT&T began using fiber-optic links and lasers to transmit communications between the two cities. The hookup, which stretches 372 miles, is the first link in a new $125 million fiber-optics system the Bell System is building which will connect Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and Richmond, Va.
