US seeks resignation of convicted Teamsters chief

The Justice Department will seek the immediate resignation of Teamsters president Roy L. Williams during hearings beginning today (Feb. 7) in Chicago. Under federal law he could serve out his term in office until all appeals were exhausted.
Williams and three others have been convicted in conspiring to bribe former Sen. Howard Cannon, Monitor correspondent Ed Townsend reports. The four face maximum sentences of 55 years. The Justice Department has said it will present ''new evidence'' in presentencing hearings that organized crime groups exert control over Williams and the Teamsters.
