Free soil test can pay off for gardeners

February 4, 1983

As springtime nears, many gardeners will want to test their soil. Soil testing often results in stronger plants and financial savings in fertilizer use, because the specific nutrient needs of the soil are revealed.

Most state universities offer soil testing for a fee through cooperative extension services. Massachusetts residents, for example, may write to the Soil Testing Lab, Suburban Experiment Station, 240 Beaver Street, Waltham, Mass. 02254.

For a $5 fee, this office will send you a special mailer with which you can return soil to them for analysis.

Gardeners can save time by bringing samples directly to local extension offices. Consult your state university for more information about the program in your area.
