Jobless rate spirals in U.K., West Germany

Unemployment in Great Britain and West Germany reached higher levels in January, according to figures released in London and Bonn Thursday. Britain's rate rose to a record 13.8 percent (over 3.2 million people), and was one of the worst among major industrial countries.

West German unemployment rose to 2.49 million, or 10.2 percent of the work force. This is West Germany's highest level since 1951.
