Judge halts school prayer pending court challenge

Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell has stopped Alabama teachers from leading prayers in classrooms while a legal challenge to the practice is pending. In a brief order, Justice Powell postponed the effect of last month's ruling by a Mobile, Ala., federal judge who threw out suits challenging classroom prayer in the state.
