W. Germany to finish Rhine-Danube canal

February 3, 1983

West Germany's conservative-led government decided Wednesday to complete a controversial canal linking the Rhine and Danube Rivers, reversing a decision by the former government to halt the project, a government spokesman said.

The 105-mile Rhine-Danube canal, which would open up a 2,125-mile waterway from the North Sea to the Black Sea, is only 22 miles from completion.
