Indira Gandhi names son to prominent party post

February 3, 1983

Rajiv Gandhi, the eldest son of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Wednesday was appointed a general secretary of the ruling Congress-I Party, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

Naming him to his first formal party post, Mrs. Gandhi is apparently attempting to groom her son as a possible successor. He will be one of five party general secretaries, who will look after the day-to-day running of the party.
