Truck drivers due to go on strike today

January 31, 1983

Independent truck drivers across the US are scheduled to go on strike at 12: 01 a.m. today (Jan. 31). The strike was called by the Los Angeles-based Independent Truckers Association, which represents 30,000 of more than 100,000 independent truckers in the US. The association urged truckers to park their rigs and not move until Congress rolls back on the Surface Transportation Act of 1982, which raised fuel taxes by 5 cents a gallon and imposed higher user fees on trucks.
