UN peace-keeping force to stay on in Lebanon

January 20, 1983

The Security Council extended for six months the mandate of the UN peace-keeping force in Lebanon, despite Israel's assertion that it is no longer needed.

The vote was 13 in favor and none against, with the Soviet Union and Poland abstaining. But the council made no change in the force's area of operations, which Lebanon wants extended to cover the entire country instead of only the southern part, where it has been deployed since 1978.
