Soviet long-range missiles going to Syria, US says

January 19, 1983

The Soviet Union is stocking Syria with long-range antiaircraft SAM-5 missiles, posing a greater threat to Israeli warplanes conducting operations over Lebanon, US intelligence sources say.

Syria has prepared sites for the missiles at Damascus, its capital, and at its western city of Homs. Sources said some equipment, including missile canisters and vehicles to haul them, recently arrived in the Arab country.
