US may reduce raises for government jobs

January 13, 1983

Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger said Wednesday President Reagan will announce soon a ''government-wide'' cost-cutting policy that will reduce proposed pay increases for government employees.

The statement followed a Los Angeles Times report that Mr. Reagan is considering a pay freeze for all government employees in a move to save an additional $4.6 billion. On NBC's ''Today'' show, Mr. Weinberger said the new policy will account for a large part of $8 billion in defense savings announced Tuesday.
