Peace pushed by Iraqi, Iranian opposition leader

January 11, 1983

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz held five hours of talks with Iranian opposition leader Massoud Rajavi outside Paris. Mr. Aziz and Mr. Rajavi, chairman of the National Council of Resistance, said in a joint communique they agreed on the need to end the 28-month-old war between Iran and Iraq. It was the first known contact between the Iraqi government and the council, which links most major groups opposed to the rule of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
