Israel says Syria prepares for Soviet SAM-5 missiles

January 5, 1983

Israel's military command charged that Syria is building two bases for ultra-sophisticated Soviet-made SAM-5 antiaircraft missiles inside its borders. To date, the weapons have been deployed only inside the Soviet Union. The command cited unidentified reports that the bases will be used for the SAM-5s. The announcement said the bases have not yet been staffed, and it gave no indication when the Israelis believe they will be operational. The report followed comments by Foreign Minister Yitzhak Shamir Monday that Israel and the United States are investigating possible Soviet arms shipments to Syria.
