Lebanon pullout talks fail for the third time

January 4, 1983

Lebanese, Israeli, and United States negotiators failed for a third time to reach agreement on an agenda for talks aimed at arranging the withdrawal of Israel's invasion force from Lebanon.

At the end of the Monday session, the three delegations issued similar statements reporting a lack of any progress. Unlike statements issued after previous meetings, they made no reference to the mood of the negotiations. The US reportedly pledged a more active role in the talks prior to Monday's session.

Monday was the fourth straight day of intense fighting between pro- and anti-Syrian forces in Lebanon's second-largest city of Tripoli.
