First of newly-elected governors take office

January 3, 1983

Three new governors, all Democrats, took office over the holiday weekend, and three other governors-elect are to be inaugurated early this week. New Mexico Gov. Toney Anaya has become the only Hispanic state chief executive in the nation, and Gov. James Blanchard is the first Democratic governor of Michigan in 20 years. Gov. Mario Cuomo, during his first day in office, pledged to lead the fight in Washington for a more equitable distribution of federal aid for the Northeast.

Gubernatorial ceremonies scheduled this week include California Republican George Deukmejian and Wisconsin Democrat Anthony Earl today (Jan. 3), and Florida Democrat Bob Graham on Tuesday.
