Arafat flies to Majorca for talks with Kreisky

December 28, 1982

Palestine Liberation Organization chairman Yasser Arafat headed to this Mediterranean island Monday for talks with Austrian Chancellor Bruno Kreisky, who reportedly was overseeing the first direct talks between the PLO and Israel.

A Kreisky spokesman refused to comment on a report in Newsweek magazine saying Israel and the PLO had been negotiating under Mr. Kreisky's auspices in Austria on the release of prisoners of war captured in Lebanon. Mr. Arafat flew to Palma de Mallorca from Algiers, where he met with Chinese Premier Zhao Ziyang Sunday.
