Labor to rally for election to resolve Portugal crisis

Portugal's Communist-dominated labor movement Wednesday called for a wave of nationwide rallies to press for early general elections after the fall of Prime Minister Francisco Pinto Balsemao's right-wing government.

The government's resignation, accepted by President Antonio Ramalho Eanes Tuesday night, created a political vacuum and virtually paralyzed the machinery of state.
