Syrinam coup attempt appears to have failed

Military leader Desi Bouterse apparently crushed an attempted coup, closing schools and imposing a dusk-to-dawn curfew ''to prevent chaos and a bloodbath'' in the tiny South America nation.

Surinam radio reports said an undetermined number of people were arrested Wednesday after the offices of two radio stations, a union, and a Paramaribo newspaper were burned to the ground in an apparent uprising.
