Egyptian officials pay surprise visit to Lebanon

December 9, 1982

Two senior Egyptian officials paid a surprise visit to Beirut in what appeared to be a new move to speed up talks on the withdrawal. Butros Butros Ghali, Egypt's minister of state for foreign affairs, and presidential adviser Osama Baz sent straight to a tightly guarded meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Shafik Wazzan.

Meanwhile, the White House made an urgent new appeal Wednesday for withdrawal of all foreign troops from Lebanon and progress toward an overall Mideast peace, as President Reagan's senior advisers met to review the situation.
