Afghan guerrillas press raids before snow flies

December 8, 1982

Muslim guerrillas have launched a campaign of pre-winter attacks in Kabul, the Afghan capital, and in Kandahar, the second-largest city, Western diplomats and refugee sources said.

Diplomatic sources in Islamabad said there have been almost daily bombings and acts of sabotage in Kabul while the guerrillas moved around openly in some parts of Kandahar. The attacks reached a point where Afghanistan's official news media reported some of them, either to preserve credibility or in an attempt to discredit the guerrillas, they said.
