16 killed in Ulster by IRA bomb blast

A bomb blast set off by Irish Republican guerrillas ripped through a bar and discotheque packed with British soldiers Monday night, killing 16 people and injuring 66, police said Tuesday. About 150 were inside when the explosion occurred.

The outlawed Irish National Liberation Army (INLA) - a Marxist breakaway group from the Irish Republican Army - claimed responsibility for the bombing in an anonymous call to a Belfast television station. ''While the loss of life was regrettable, people had been warned of the danger of associating with the security forces,'' the INLA said in its statement to the press.
