Reagan suggests Brazilian join a US space mission

December 3, 1982

President Reagan proposed that a Brazilian astronaut be trained along with United States astronauts for a possible joint space mission.

It was a surprise addition to a speech dealing almost totally with meeting Brazilian-US economic problems. He gave no further details. The Soviets have trained Cuban, East German, Vietnamese, French, and Czech astronauts; all have gone into space with Soviet cosmonauts. The US and USSR have had joint exercises in space, but the US has never trained astronauts of another country.
