Court settlement gives stewardesses $52.5 million

A federal judge ordered Northwest Airlines to pay $52.5 million in compensation to stewardesses it discriminated against by paying them less than it paid male attendants.

Judge Aubrey Robinson of the federal District Court in Washington signed the order, the largest settlement ever awarded in an employment-discrimination case. Northwest's lawyer said the airline would appeal.
