Pentagon announces sale of war materiel to Taiwan

December 2, 1982

The Pentagon said it planned to sell Taiwan $97 million worth of Army vehicles, the first such deal since a joint United States-Chinese statement was issued on limiting arms sales to the Taiwanese.

The Pentagon notified Congress of the proposed Taiwan sale, which includes 164 armored personnel carriers, 72 mortar carriers, and 31 command vehicles, plus support equipment. Congress has 30 days in which it can veto major arms deals.
