Democrat incumbents win special Georgia elections

December 2, 1982

Two Democratic congressmen whose campaigns were stalled through the summer by a bitter fight over the redistricting of Atlanta's black population were reelected easily in Georgia's special elections.

Rep. Wyche Fowler Jr., the white liberal who succeeded Mayor Andrew Young in Congress six years ago, was a surprisingly easy winner over two black challengers in the downtown Atlanta district. Rep. Elliott Levitas overwhelmed Republican Dick Winder for a fifth term in Congress.
