Air-safety revision plan concerns congressmen

November 24, 1982

Members of the House government operations transportation subcommittee expressed concern that airline passenger safety would be threatened if the government were allowed to repeal its safety rules.

The Federal Aviation Administration proposed the repeal of almost all airline regulations, with most to be reissued as guidelines for individual airline companies. FAA Administrator Lynn Helms said the same safety standards would still be followed, but airlines would have more flexibility to come up with ways to meet the standards or even increase safety.
