European unemployment surges to a postwar high

The number of jobless in the European Community soared to 11.5 million last month, or 10.3 percent, the highest since World War II. The inflation rate fell to its lowest point for more than three years.

The rate of consumer price rises was 0.9 percent last month, with the increase for the 12 months ending in October falling to 10.1 percent.
