Republican Gov. James Thompson has won reelection to an unprecedented third straight term in the closest statewide race in modern Illinois history, the State Board of Elections said.

An official tally showed Governor Thompson beat Democrat Adlai Stevenson III by 5,074 out of more than 3 1/2 million ballots cast. The margin is less than 0. 2 percent of the total number of ballots.
