FDP finishes convention ahead, losing extreme left

West Germany's Free Democratic Party (FDP), which just reelected as its chief Foreign Minister Hans Dietrich Genscher, survived its Nov. 5-7 convention losing only its far-left youth element and none of its leaders, Monitor correspondent Elizabeth Pond reports.

The battered FDP now pins its hopes for continued survival in the planned March election on the voters' urge to block both the left-wing Greens and the right-wing Christian Social Union.
