Eight Salvadoran leftists will be tried as terrorists

October 27, 1982

Military authorities announced they will try eight members of El Salvador's leftist opposition by court martial on charges of terrorist acts against the state.

Included in the eight are three members of the moderate Revolutionary Democratic Front (FDR) who were reported kidnapped last week. The FDR is a moderate umbrella group of a dozen unarmed political organizations, but it has ties with guerrilla groups fighting the US-backed government. Most FDR leaders live in exile for fear of their lives.
