A typographical error was made in the column by Sen. Paul Tsongas, ''Why the Senate is concerned about East Timor,'' published Oct. 15. The text should have read (italicized words were previously omitted): ''It is hoped thatm President Reagan has impressed upon President Suharto that the United States will no longer support even indirectly the Indonesian government's abusive human rights policy.''
