How to invest a million dollars in human capital: A program to provide computer literacy by 1986 for all graduates of Jefferson High School in Portland , Ore. A project to enlist parents in helping underperforming students to improve their study skills at Glenn High School in Birmingham. A program to enrich the humanities curriculum to attract more white students to Benson High School in Omaha.

These are a few of the 50 programs in 30 cities to receive $20,000 each from the Ford Foundation in its laudable program for recognizing the excellence often overlooked in city schools. Last spring $1,000 awards noted gains already made. This round builds on success.

Go for it! It's about time someone was bullish on the public schools.
