If you're a tennis buff and England's Wimbledon is too much of a struggle between getting the tickets and negotiating the crowd, you might want to consider the French Tennis Championship in Paris. It's an annual event during the last week of May and the first week of June at Roland Garros Stadium in the Bois du Bologne.

Traditionally a warm-up for Queen's and Wimbledon, this tournament attracts most of the top players. The stadium is small, compact, and attractive. All courts are easily accessible, and there are no crowds to battle. It is easy to reach by metro from major hotel areas, and tickets are much easier to get than to Wimbledon. Write to Federation Francaise de Tennis, Stade Roland Garros, avenue Gordon Bennett, 76016 Paris, for an application form.
