US Rep. Bill Chappell Jr., one of the ''boll weevil'' Democratic backers of President Reagan's economic program, survived a challenge from oilman Reid Hughes in Florida's runoff primary.

In the only statewide race, state Sen. Van Poole defeated Palm Beach County State Attorney David Bludworth for the Republican Senate nomination and will take on Democratic incumbent Sen. Lawton Chiles in November.
