S. Africa jets shoot down MIG fighter over Angola

October 6, 1982

South African jets shot down a Soviet-built MIG fighter over southern Angola Tuesday, said Gen. Constand Viljoen, chief of South African defense forces.

Two South African reconnaisance planes and two escort aircraft were ''reconnoitering'' a buildup of missile installations, concentrations of South West African People's Organization guerrillas, and logistical bases when four MIGs attacked them, General Viljoen said. The nationality of the MIG pilot was not immediately known.
