Record jobless figures greet new Bonn premier

October 5, 1982

Chancellor Helmut Kohl's center-right government took office Monday, pledging to bring West Germany an economic revival.

As it did so, the worst September unemployment figures in West Germany's history were announced, with 1.82 million people, or 7.5 percent, of the work force out of work last month.

Mr. Kohl formally took charge of the Bonn Chancellery from Social Democrat Helmut Schmidt, whom he unseated in an unprecedented parliamentary vote last Friday.
