More flee in Louisiana after 3rd rail car blast

September 30, 1982

Fire officials said Wednesday they had no means to combat a blazing wreck of railroad chemical tankers, threatening to throw off poisonous gases.

The derailment of 42 tanker cars carrying a variety of highly toxic chemicals has forced the evacuation of this central Louisiana town's 3,000 residents. The cause of the derailment was not known and may never be determined if intense heat from the blaze melts tracks in the area of the accident, state police said.
