US Jewish group decries massacre, backs probe

September 28, 1982

The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations called the Beirut massacre "tragic" and welcomed the nomination of Israel's chief justice to investigate it.

The group issued a statement signed by its president, Julius Berman, saying that serious questions about Israeli responsibility had arisen from charges made in the Israeli press and in last week's emergency Knesset debate.

The conference represents 36 US Jewish organizations.
