If Willie were a manager

September 23, 1982

Quietly, which is his way, Willie Stargell, who retires at the end of the current season after 20 years with the Pittsburgh Pirates, has let it be known that some day he would like to manage in the big leagues. Stargell says, if he ever gets the chance, he'll take a little of what he learned under Danny Murtaugh, a little of what he learned under Bill Virdon, and a lot of what he learned under his present manager, Chuck Tanner. Stargell's teammates are picking up the tab for a trip to France after the season for Willie and his wife , Delores.
