Process to pick successor to Fraser begun by UAW

September 21, 1982

Top officials of the United Auto Workers began the painstaking process of picking a successor to Douglas Fraser as president of the 1.2 million-member union.

A five-day meeting of the powerful union Executive Board began at 9 a.m. Eastern daylight time. At least four men seeking Fraser's post were expected to formally declare their candidacy. Mr. Fraser will retire next year at the age of 65.
