The enchantment

September 21, 1982

Step gently as you enter my heart, not disturbing the candleflickers set ceremoniously round the table of my dreams.

Walk tenderly as you walk toward me, plucking from my memory's paw the hurtful thorn.

Dance lightly if you dare approach me, winding, while your feet like whispers brush the floor, the maylike garland of your sanguine promises.

Drop like a spot of rain on sunstained pavement, blush on my sandlike cheeks.

Give to me, if you come to love me, the amulet of hope in springtime, the summer charm of childlike peace.
