UN Security Council assails Palestinian deaths

September 20, 1982

The Security Council unanimously condemned the ''criminal massacre of Palestinian civilians in Beirut'' and authorized an increase in the number of UN observers in the city from 10 to 50.

The resolution did not ascribe responsibility for the killings. The draft requested Secretary General Javier Perez de Cuellar to consult urgently with the Lebanese government on further measures, including the possible deployment of UN forces to help ensure full civilian protection in and around Beirut.
