Congress reconvenes, will fight over Reagan veto

The 97th Congress headed into a fight with President Reagan over a $14.1 billion appropriation bill veto, afterreconvening Wednesday for a final brief session before the Nov. 2 elections.

A last-minute financial agreement averted a temporary layoff of 19,000 federal government tax collectors and investigators because of the confrontation over the veto. The taxmen and thousands other federal employees, as well as military troops, face payless days next week if the President and Congress cannot agree by then on a measure to fund payrolls this month.
