Angels bolster pitching

September 8, 1982

California Angels owner Gene Autry, who has been trying to buy a pennant all year, thinks he got the extra pitching he needs for the stretch drive by trading with the Yankees for Tommy John and buying John Curtis from the Padres. The earned-run average of the Angels pitching staff since the All-Star break had been hovering around 4.64 runs per game, much too high for a contender. Incidentally, John will be eligible for the playoffs if California should win its division since he was obtained prior to the Sept. 1 deadline.
