Key guerrilla strongholds turned over to Lebanon

Lebanese gendarmes Sunday took control of the Holiday Inn and 40-story Murr Tower, ending a seven-year reign by guerrillas who turned the buildings into key fortresses in the heart of west Beirut.

It was Lebanon's latest step to recover control of the war-torn Lebanese capital from the private militias that have operated freely since the 1975-76 civil war.
