Black bishop wins 'permit' from S. Africa to visit US

Bishop Desmond Tutu, secretary-general of the South African Council of Churches, was granted a temporary travel document to attend a convention of the US Episcopal Church in New Orleans this month.

The black militant church leader, whose application for a passport was recently refused by the South African Supreme Court, told a commission inquiring into council finances he couldn't understand why a travel permit - but not a passport - could be issued him, since he would say the same things with either document.
