Ulster Protestant leader shot by Irish nationalists

The Irish National Liberation Army claimed responsibility for an assassination attempt on a leading Protestant politician who was shot Wednesday night.

The republican group said it attacked Belfast City Councilor Billy Dickson, a party colleague of Protestant leader Ian Paisley, because ''he belonged to a Fascist organization.''

Paisley Wednesday launched his party's campaign for the Ulster assembly elections in October.
